Hi Darrill - I use centre weighted as my subject is usually in the centre of the frame. If I use evaluative, it's more likely that dark or bright stands behind the subject will throw the metering off. Similarly, spot metering could be confused if the subject was wearing a white shirt for example.

With centre weighted, it gets "good enough" so that it is tweakable in post processing and you're very unlikely to lose any shots.

Great post! Really loving the whole blog actually - not many from sports snappers out there, and it really is a fascinating area of work.

I'm just getting my first taste of shooting professional football and I still can't resist flipping my camera around and capturing the fans - they really do make the spirit and energy of the game (its also another subtle change in focus that can make the difference between we 'little guys' and the agency brutes!).

Hi,
Interesting article. I am also using the 1D4 to photograph primarily rugby. I also set the aperture to f2.8-f4 in the custom menus and I use CF 1:12 to restrict the shutter speed to 1/1000 and faster. And then save the lot onto an SD card so I can get the camera to this state when needed.
What I am interested in though is why you use centre weighted average metering rather than evaluative? Seems counter intuitive when you you might be getting very contrasting areas in the frame.
But I'll give it a try this weekend (if we get any sun).
Thanks for all articles and photos to admire.

It's a bit sickening that they can just nick your work like that. I agree that it's likely to be not worth the effort to chase them. I doubt you'd even get a legal team involved as their fee's are going to be beyond any recompense you'll get I'd expect.

Great news about the rugby shot though. It is absolute class!

I used a new 8GB Transcend CF card in my D300 at Cadwell Park and it gave me about a dozen corrupt images, this card now goes at the bottom of the chain behind my two Sandisk extreme II's !!

Can you pick up any WiFi networks? Say for example you can access the Millennium Hotel from the ground it will cost a tenner for 24hrs. 4G could be an area you could research as I'm not sure about costs but it is starting to become available. You also have BT WiFi but in my experience its not overly reliable.
Just a couple of ideas for you.
